People paid less for food, alcohol, tobacco, heating, lighting and other laundry goods for the month of March.

The Bureau of Statistics state that the average annual rate of inflation for the twelve months to March 2009 stands at 6.5 percent.

Prices for wheat products, fresh meat, fresh fish, fresh and preserved fruits, mineral water, dairy products, fats and oils and market items such as cabbages, long green chilies, eggplant, local tomatoes, cucumber, rourou, bele, pumpkin, onion, potatoes, garlic, dalo, cassava and peas decreased by 1.3 percent while alcoholic drinks and tobacco decreased by 0.3 percent and heating and lighting by 7.5 percent.

Durable household goods like furniture, electrical and non-electrical prices, and duty free goods, jewelry, travel and sports goods prices increase by 0.6 percent while housing prices increased by 0.1 percent.
