Ousted Prime Minister Laisenia Qarase has stressed that any military officers or civil servants leave pay cannot be accumulated to the extent of Army Commander Commodore Frank Bainimarama.
Qarase said Mahendra Chaudhry should know this and the Military Act is quite clear on this that leave pay cannot be accumulated. He added that over $180,000 of leave payout to Commodore Bainimarama is uncalled for.
Chaudhry had refused to make further clarifications on the breakdown of the leave payout for the Army Commander.
The Finance Ministry paid Commodore Bainimarama over $180,000 in February for outstanding leave of 693 days since 1978.
The Auditor General is currently investigating the payout.
