The Education Ministry is hoping the "laxity syndrome" that is common around external exam times will not resurface and be a problem.

Minister Filipe Bole said as the Fiji Junior Certificate exams begins today, teachers should be mindful of this time and plan exciting and innovative teaching programmes that will sustain students interest to actively engage themselves in class activities.

He added this should not impede on the general flow of classes stressing the need for teachers to maintain and tighten up discipline in school.

Bole said students need to be reminded to abide by the school rules and assist teachers with their work, and has also called on junior students to be considerate of senior students sitting for exams.

He added punctuality to school, completing assignments and tasks, wearing proper school uniform, having respect for teachers and fellow students are rules that must continue to be maintained.

Bole added students can easily take advantage of the lack of monitoring and supervision from both parents and teachers during these exam times, and opt in activities other than their schoolwork.

Meanwhile Police have warned that any student in uniform found loitering in town during school hours will be taken to task.

Spokesperson Fred Elbourne said officers will also be checking internet shops and amusement centres to see that children are not wasting their time.
