The lawyer representing the former Fiji Prime Minister, Mahendra Chaudhry, is expected to apply for bail for his client when he appears in the Tavua Magistrates Court.

Chaudhry was taken in for questioning with five others, including his driver, for allegedly having meetings with cane farmers without a permit.

Under the Public Emergency Regulation, such meetings need a permit according to the Police.

Chaudhry, former Labour parliamentarian and National Farmers Union executive Sanjeet Maharaj and others were arrested in Rakiraki on Friday and have been in custody during the course of the investigations.

Fijivillage has been informed that Police were notified about the alleged meetings from some members of the Rakiraki community.

Meanwhile Chaudhry's lawyer, Queens Counsel Peter Williams said he expects his client to be granted bail when he appears in court today.

Williams has told Radio NZ that Chaudhry was assessing the impact of the drought on cane farmers in the Western division.
