The Fiji Law Society came under attack today at the 10th Attorney General's Conference in Sigatoka on its inaction in dealing with complaints against its members.

Interim Attorney General Aiyaz Sayed-Khaiyum in his closing speech questioned the selective inaction taken by the society to acknowledge the complaints of the public against lawyers as well as those raised by the Consumer Council of Fiji.

Sayed-Khaiyum questioned whether the disciplinary processes of the law only applied to certain lawyers, adding that only well connected lawyers seemed immune to disciplinary action.

He questioned the society on why they have not taken any action towards the approximately 190 reported cases against lawyers over the last ten years.

However, the President of the Fiji Law Society said the Attorney General has blown the issue out of proportion adding that the society has always dealt with complaints against its members.
