The interim Minister for Indigenous Affairs Provincial Development and Multi Ethnic Affairs has today revealed that most landowning units are willing to renew their leases.

Ratu Epeli Nailatikau has informed Cabinet that four taskforce teams were set up by the Committee on Better Utilization of Lands to visit native landowners whose lands were leased, or previously leased for agricultural purposes.

Ratu Epeli said following the consultations, the taskforce teams have advised that most landowners are willing to renew leases.

The team has advised that of the 2,252 leases that expired from 1997 to 2007, 1,929 leases have either been renewed or were being processed by the NLTB for renewal.

According to Ratu Epeli a total of 3,618 leases have expired from 1997 to 2010 and out of which 2,864 are expected to be renewed.

He said those renewals would return an estimated 7,716 hectares to cane production and is expected to produce 308,604 tonnes of sugar with gross revenue of $262 million.
