The issue of sugarcane land leases has been used as a political football game over the years by some politicians.

These are the words of Interim Lands Minister, Netani Sukanaivalu who said politicians in the past have been self-centered and have done nothing to solve the land problems.

He adds so far the Interim Government has managed to renew most of the expired sugarcane land leases from 1997 to 2007 just by making sure that land owners receive the full benefit of their land.

In an interview with Fijivillage News, Sukanaivalu confirms that 86 percent of land leases that will be used for sugarcane farming have been renewed or are in the process of being renewed.

Sukanaivalu said this percentage has been achieved by working tirelessly with the various landowning units throughout the country.
