Sharks and Springboks fly‑half Pat Lambie is facing six weeks out with a neck injury in a major blow to his side's Super Rugby hopes.
Lambie injured his neck in last Saturday's thrashing by the Crusaders.
His absence means that Fred Zeilinga is likely to get an extended run in the Sharks side over the next few weeks as they try to restore some order, after losing Lambie and others to a number of suspensions.
Their captain Bismarck du Plessis ,is still banned for three more weeks for kicking another player, while Jean Deysel was suspended on yesterday for seven weeks.
After Round 8 of Super Rugby, the Hurricanes continue to top the table with 31 points, second are Brumbies with 24 points while the Bulls trail in third place with 19 points.
The Sharks will meet the Lions at 3.05am Sunday.
