As the Sugar Festival kicks off officially from today, the Lautoka Sugar Festival Association hopes to raise more than $200,000 dollars from the weeklong event.
Lack of sponsorship has not dampened the spirits of the Lautoka Sugar Festival Association.
Vice President, Pushp Raj said the money collected from the festival will go towards assisting people in Lautoka district while some money will go towards their operational costs.
He adds they have a lot of support from the business community.
Meanwhile, Raj said more than 15 contestants will be competing for the Miss Sugar 2009 title in the weeklong event and this is the first time such a large number of contestants are participating.
The Acting President Ratu Epeli Nailatikau will be the chief guest as the festival starts today.
