Three political parties have so far confirmed that they will reinstate the Great Council of Chiefs if they form the next government.

The Fiji Labour Party which was the first to announce that it will reinstate the GCC says that Prime Minister, Voreqe Bainimarama had no right to remove the GCC.

People’s Democratic Party Leader, Felix Anthony said the GCC is needed to look after the interests of the iTaukei.

The PDP will also let the people elect the taxpayer funded provincial council members.

Social Democratic Liberal Party’s Doctor Tupeni Baba said SODELPA is of the view that the GCC should make the decisions for all the iTaukei in the country.

The National Federation Party says it will ensure that the GCC issue is discussed by all stakeholders when they have a review of the constitution.

Party Leader, Doctor Biman Prasad said their focus is on contesting the elections and any decision on the GCC will be based on consensus.

However Prime Minister, Voreqe Bainimarama confirmed in an earlier interview with Fijivillage that the Great Council of Chiefs is not coming back as the government wants the ordinary itaukei to make their own decisions in the future.

Bainimarama said the GCC was politicised and was only looking after the interests of some politicians and some elite itaukei.
