The Land Transport Authority is yet to respond to concerns being raised on its new requirement for the customers to produce their water and electricity bills when dealing with LTA.

The Consumer Council of Fiji is calling on LTA to reconsider its requirement.

Chief Executive Officer, Premila Kumar said the council cannot understand the rationale behind the notice which states that vehicle owners need to produce water and electricity bills to renew their driving licenses, permits or any other transactions.

The notice also states that no application, renewal or registration will be conducted without a valid water and electricity bill and this is effective immediately.

Kumar said the notice does not clearly state what happens to a family where more than one member owns a vehicle but does not have a separate water and electricity meter under their name adding that electricity and water bills are normally under one person's name.

Kumar added that if the intention is to get the correct physical and postal address of the vehicle owners than LTA should consider using voter registration cards or other valid identification to confirm the owner’s physical and postal addresses.

She said that many vehicle owners across the country do not have a meter for either water or electricity or both.
