Only half fare will be charged to school children if they get on designated school buses.

That is the stand of the Land Transport Authority who are currently in consultation with the Fiji Bus Operators and the Education Ministry to try to come to a consensus with regards to school children's bus fares.

LTA Chief Executive, Etuate Koroi said that they understand the plight of the children however the law is in place with regards to the bus fares.

When asked whether they will be relooking at the Transport Act regarding Bus Fares, Koroi said that the law clearly states that school children are given half rate on designated school buses.

LTA had earlier told Fijivillage news that if the school children do miss the school bus then it is up to the discretion of the bus drivers whether to charge the school-children adult fares or not.

However, Koroi said they are hoping to come to a consensus after recent reports that school children miss school on an average of three times a week as a result of the hike in bus fares earlier this year.
