The Land Transport Authority has hit back at FIT's Commerce Faculty Dean, Dr Mahendra Reddy after he said that LTA should be taken to task for failure to maintain the roads, since they are the ones who collect the Road User Levy which was introduced this year.
LTA Manager Central/Eastern, Ratu Eroni Volavola said people like Reddy and Fiji Taxi Union General Secretary, Rishi Ram who supported the move, should understand that LTA was instructed by government to collect the Road User Levy and their job was not to fix the roads.
He said although government expected to generate some $8million a year for road maintenance, Volavola said it’s not enough since the road budget every year always reached more than $100 million dollars and the two gentlemen should think before they criticize anyone.
Works Ministry Spokesperson, Sainiana Waqainabete is also surprised with comments made by the Fiji Taxi Union on the upgrade of roads.
Waqainabete adds it’s not fair to say that road user levy money is not spent correctly.
