With all taxi drivers to have their meters up and running by this morning, LTA has revealed that residents in Taveuni, Nabouwalu and Levuka will not be affected as they are taxi meter free zones.
Land Transport Authority (LTA) Spokesperson Ratu Eroni Volvola said that this decision was reached after consultation however drivers in these three areas will be given a set fare that will be charged to their customers.
Volavola added they are now embarking on an awareness campaign so that the public is aware, that everywhere else will be using a meter.
LTA also added that the only other time where taxi meters will not be used, is when the driver and passenger agrees on a set fare for a long distance run.
So if the meters are not switched on this morning when you get into a cab, LTA advises you to take the taxi registration down and report to them as soon as possible.
Taxi drivers face a maximum fine of $200 if they do not use meters from this morning.
