The Land Transport Authority has strongly stated that all complaints against taxi and bus drivers that have been filed in relation to cases of harassment have been dealt with accordingly.
LTA’s spokesperson, Iliesa Sokia has made this clear as an aspiring candidate in the general elections, Roshika Deo is claiming that LTA has not done anything in relation to these cases.
He said when complaints are filed, they conduct their investigation and when there are criminal elements they also forward them to Police.
He said they have terminated close to 50 driving licenses this year and most of these are taxi and bus drivers.
Roshika Deo was quoted as saying in the US media during her recent visit there that women and girls in Fiji do not feel safe to travel in public service vehicles.
Statistics given in the reports were also misleading as she was quoted as saying that violence against women in Fiji stands at 80 percent and there are only 3 percent of women in the Fijian parliament.
When questioned by Fijivillage on these statistics, Roshika Deo admitted that these are factual errors and the US report got it wrong.
She said these statistics are for the whole of the Pacific region and not just Fiji.
We questioned Deo whether she has conducted any proper survey on these claims.
She said the surveys are being done on facebook.
Fijivillage then questioned her how reliable is this information as people can write anything on facebook against anyone without any proper verification or investigation.
She said she trusts all the people posting information on facebook.
Roshika Deo also mentioned the issue about girls being assaulted under village by-laws for wearing mini-skirts.
We questioned her whether she also highlighted that these cases are from previous years and ended up in court where the perpetrators faced criminal charges.
Deo was also questioned by us on whether she highlighted that the village by-laws have not been approved as law in the country.
Deo said these questions were not asked so she did not highlight them in America.
