Police Commissioner Commodore Esala Teleni has confirmed in the last hour that Naitasiri High Chief Ratu Inoke Takiveikata and businessman Ballu Khan are being question in relation to an alleged plot to assassinate Interim Prime Minister Commodore Frank Bainimarama and other senior military officers.

Commodore Teleni confirms that others are expected to be rounded up by police and military.

Commodore Esala Teleni: Yesterday the Fiji Police force with the support of the Fiji Military Forces apprehended some individuals and conducted investigations into the alleged plot into the assassination of the Interim Prime Minister, some members of the interim Government and some senior members of the Military Forces.

In the last weeks, the Fiji Police and through the assistance of certain government agencies were monitoring certain plots by former members of the Counter Revolutionary Warfare Unit, certain businessman, high chiefs and prominent members of political parties to bring about instability and conduct insurgent activities in Fiji.

Through credible intelligence, we were able to ascertain that these individuals were adamant in their conduct and ventured on a mission to destablise the peace and good order within Fiji.

The real threat of the use of arms and explosives was imminent. The plot is said to be well planned, rehearsed and possibly numerous training have been conducted by individuals. It has become evident that these individuals collectively are very adamant in their mission.

Having carefully analyzed the intelligence, and the development of the situation, yesterday afternoon the Fiji Police Force with the support of the Republic of Fiji Military Forces carried out the necessary actions to neutralize the prevailing security threat.

The police investigations are continuing as we speak and the due process of law will be observed. I must say that more people will be brought in for questioning in the next few days.

Intelligence reports has also highlighted that individuals who have plotted these assassinations may have the backing of certain non-government organisations who have financially contributed to their plots.

Also it has been revealed that some of our neighbouring governments may have been involved in this plot to the extent of financing the NGO's course that in turn is supporting individuals.

It seems from the initial report that there have been conspiracy and consolidated effort to disrupt the peaceful environment within Fiji.

There are efforts being made to create unfavorable environment that may provide excuses to certain lurking nations to interfere in the affairs of Fiji.

The police and military actions were necessary to avoid instability and warranted bloodshed.

Our effort is a deterrent and to interrupt plan and cycle before reaching maturity.

I would like to therefore remind elements with a desire to cause instability that any effort to destablise the peace and goodwill will be strongly resisted and individuals will be taken to task and made answerable for their conduct.

Finally, ladies and gentlemen, i would like to assure the people of Fiji that the current situation is well under control and our security forces, the police and the military will ensure that the security and safety of our people will remain paramount.
