Navy Commander Francis Kean's legal counsel Haroon Ali Shah said he has been instructed by his client if he could appeal the 18 months sentence imposed yesterday by High Court Judge Justice Gerard Winter after Kean pleaded guilty to one count of manslaughter.
Shah said the decision on the matter is expected to be made by next week since they believe that his sentenced should have been suspended.
Meanwhile, the military have not yet made a decision on whether
Kean will be allowed to take back his post after completing his sentence.
Army Spokesperson Lieutenant Colonel Mosese Tikoitoga said he will not comment on the matter since the decision has not been made as yet.
High Court Judge Justice Gerard Winter said in the case yesterday, that a non custodial sentence could not be considered, as maximum assault was used by Kean, who could have avoided causing the death of John, had he controlled his temper at the wedding of his niece, Interim Prime Minister, Frank Bainimarama's daughter.
