He was born and raised in Kavanagasau, Nadroga, and went to boarding school at Natabua High.
Now 32-year-old Petty Officer Second Class Shammi Singh is a Logistics Specialist on board the US Navy Hospital Ship Mercy.
Singh joined the US Navy eight years ago.
He is part of the team that is in-charge of all the supplies on the ship.
Petty Officer Second Class Singh said he struggled a lot and his parents focused on ensuring that he gets a good education.
He said his father also passed away in his early years of school but he never lost hope.
Singh eventually migrated to the US to be with his family.
Speaking from the Mercy Ship berthed in Savusavu, Singh said he is proud to come back home to help the people of Fiji.
Shammi Singh also served on the US mission “Operation Iraqi Freedom” in Afghanistan in 2009.
He was looking after all the supplies for the US aircrafts used in Afghanistan on that mission.
Meanwhile, the Mercy Ship leaves for Papua New Guinea tomorrow.
