Australia’s request to have injured back rower Luke Lewis replaced for the rest of the Rugby League World Cup has been denied by tournament officials.

Lewis’ campaign ended after he injured his shoulder slamming into an advertising sign during Sunday’s 34-2 win over the Vodafone Fiji Bati.

Under tournament rules, teams are usually not allowed to replace injured players but Australia was seeking special dispensation due to the circumstances of Lewis’ injury.

Meanwhile, England meets the Vodafone Fiji Bati on Sunday at 3.30am.
