An appeal to reduce the jail term of three years for a 57 year old man was today dismissed by Justice Nazhat Shameem.

Ram Chand Sharma was given a three year jail term for a total of 7 counts of obtaining credit by false pretences, that is, issuing cheques knowing that there were insufficient funds to honour the cheques.

The court heard that in October and November 2004, Sharma obtained a 2 door freezer, a 6 burner gas stove, a washing machine, a DVD player, a TV set, sitting room furniture and a bed for the total value of $60,000 from Rups Limited.

Sharma had appealed the initial judgement of three years jail time saying that the sentence was harsh and excessive, however Shameem said the fraud carried out was systematic and calculated while Sharma has made no move to pay the money back.

Shameem then said she saw no reason to reduce the sentence and so dismissed the appeal.
