The Fiji Police Force has intercepted another major drug consignment coming into the country.
A joint operation between the Fiji Police, Australian Federal Police and United States law enforcement agencies has resulted in another successful interception of a consignment of methamphetamine worth more than 6.5 million Fijian dollars.
The consignment was intercepted at the Los Angeles Airport last week after customs officials were suspicious of the country of origin labeled on the package where similar drug seizures had been made previously.
Upon inspection, 20 packages were found in the consignment containing a pressure cooker and further testing confirmed contents to be methamphetamine weighing over 21 kilograms.
Following consultations with the Fiji Police Force as well as the Australian Federal Police it was agreed to allow the package to be sent through however with a controlled substance to determine the recipient here in Fiji.
Once the package arrived in Fiji, close surveillance conducted by the Fiji Police, Australian Federal Police and Fiji Revenue and Customs officials saw the consignment being received by two men aged 31 and 35 years.
The package was eventually seized and the two are now in police custody as investigations continue.
The 31-year-old suspect has been charged with Unlawful Transfer and Supply of Illicit Drugs in this case and will be produced at the Lautoka Magistrates Court today.
