Jaywalking and running through red lights is illegal in the country and these rules are in force to ensure people do not lose their lives on our roads.
That is the sentiment of Police Director Traffic, SSP Mahesh Mishra.
This is after concerns raised by Fijivillage News that people continue to ignore these basic road rules.
We noticed that at busy intersections like Samabula near the Fiji National University, drivers tend to speed and run through the red light.
And there are many cases of people crossing the road anywhere although they can see the cars approaching them.
On a number of occasions, the pedestrian who is jaywalking expects the cars to stop even if they themselves are breaking the law.
The fine for penalty for running red light is $80 and license suspended for three months but there is a maximum fine of $1,000 or a 6 months sentence.
He stressed that a total of 11 pedestrians have lost their lives so far this year.
Meanwhile on the issue of jay walking, the Director Traffic said under the LTA Act, a $10 spot fine was applicable for improper use of public streets by pedestrians, which the Court could push up to $200 if offenders failed to pay within 21 days.
SSP Mishra said in some cases there are no foot paths and people tend to use the roads however one should always ensure that the road is clear before using the road.
Suva's Special Administrator, Chandu Umaria said jaywalking is not allowed at all but in some cases, it cannot be helped.
He stressed that rate payers need to pay up the rates owed to the council which currently runs into $17 million and only then will the council ensure that pavements are put up right throughout the municipality.
