From today, people caught Jaywalking in busy streets where traffic lights are available will be taken to task.
This has become a major problem in cities like Suva and Lautoka.
Hopes are high that the pedestrians will now develop the habit of crossing the road according to the road rules.
The problem had become so severe that some pedestrians now expect the motorists to stop when they are crossing the road illegally.
The authorities are now determined to stop this.
Get ready to fork out $40 if you are caught Jaywalking as on the spot fines start from today.
Land Transport Authority Chief Executive, Naisa Tuinaceva said it is high time now as many pedestrians have lost their lives for being careless on the roads.
Police confirmed that they will be monitoring and booking people at the main traffic points in Suva like opposite the Suva Market and near Cainnes Jannif.
