The Japanese Government will be assisting the University of the South Pacific construct a F$29m state-of-the-art Information Communications and Technology Centre at their Laucala Campus.

Japanese Ambassador, Masashi Nimekawa told FijiVillage that the negotiations with the ousted government of Fiji was underway for last five years and a bilateral agreement between the Interim Government and government of Japan has been reached.

This Center, will include, the Computer Science Department, the Research and Development Department, the Engineering Department, the IT Service Division and a Multi Purpose Lecture Theatre.

A presentation was made by the Japanese Embassy today and proposed site was also visited. It has been confirmed that some existing buildings near the USP Library will be demolished to make room for the construction of the ICT Center.

Talks are underway with some local Contraction Companies to carry out the construction work.

Work is expected to start in October and the building is expected to be completed with an official handover in March 2010.

Seven schools will be assisted by Save the Children Fiji throught the bus fare and lunch expense programme.

The seven schools are Toko Bhartiya School, Vatukoula Convent Primary School, Vatukoula Primary, Vatukoula Arya Samaj Primary School, Balata Primary School, Balata High School and Nilsen High school.

Save the Children Fiji officials who are in Vatukoula, are now in the final stages of formalising and crosschecking the names of the students who will be assisted through this programme.

Chief Executive Officer Chandra Shekhar said the cheque for the first phase of the project will be handed over to the seven schools on Wednesday.
