Data collected by the Nadi Weather office during the height of the flash floods on Viti Levu last month reveal that January 2009 was the wettest in over 100 years.

Weather Office Director Rajendra Prasad confirmed that some sites received three to four times their normal rainfall for the month and most of the extreme rainfall occurred between January 7th to 14th, however the daily climate reporting sites at Rarawai mill, Ba and Nacocolevu, Sigatoka were flooded resulting in loss of valuable data.

The wettest place was Nabouwalu in Vanua Levu which received a total of 1383 mm of rain which is nearly four and a half times the normal rainfall for January.

Other areas which recorded rainfall over 1000 mm include Monasavu, Vatukoula, Lautoka, Nadi, Rakiraki and the same is expected for Ba, Sigatoka and other parts of the Western Division.

The weather office said 14 monthly totals and seven daily rainfall records were broken during January which will now be remembered as the wettest month in over a century.
