A man has been sentenced to two years jail time by Justice Nazhat Shameem for pleading guilty to one count of arson.

The court heard that on March 15th 2008, Luke Kata was drinking with his de-facto wife in Navua after which an argument erupted resulting in Kata setting fire to a suitcase full of his wife's clothes at their home in Navua where they were renting.

His wife had then thrown the suitcase outside and escaped out of the house but Kata picked up the burning suitcase and threw it back into the house which burnt down completely.

It was valued at $60, 000 and contained furniture worth $10,000.

Justice Shameem said the sentenced has been reduced from three to two years as Kata pleaded guilty to the charge, however the insurance company must now pay the consequences of his act thus the two years sentence.
