It’s time for a fresh approach.

According to a report published by the Australian Strategic Policy Institute written by Richard Herr, it suggests that it is time for Australia to take a fresh approach to prepare the grounds for a more effective re-engagement with the government of Fiji.

The report goes on to say that Australia has two choices, and that is they can adapt to the new circumstances or persist with the policies of the last three years, however choosing to persist with the same policies will continue the present futile impasse with Fiji.

The report adds in order for Australia to prepare the grounds for a more effective re-engagement with the Fiji Government, there is a need to eliminate some of the more important irritants that have festered for three years and have intensified feelings of disgust within the Fiji Government.

The report also highlights five recommendations to accelerate Australia's re-engagement with Fiji and that is to, re-balance the regional relationship, avoid undiplomatic language, abandon indefensible travel bans, relax defense bans and cooperate on non-traditional security issues.

The report goes on to say that hopefully the Bainimarama Government will respond in a positive fashion, as the process of re-engagement has to begin somewhere, sometime, by someone to produce a more productive relationship for the peoples of both Australia and Fiji.
