Prime Minister, Commodore Frank Bainimarama has today called on the international community and development partners to engage with Fiji because it is now a reality that the country will go to the polls in 2014.
While delivering his national address at the Tradewinds Convention Centre, Commodore Bainimarama says a definite timeframe is set and the government's position on international relations is clear.
Bainimarama has revealed that work on Fiji's new constitution will begin in the year 2012, and he says this will see major changes to the electoral system by 2013 with the race based system to be eliminated.
Bainimarama says the new constitution must be in place at least a year before the scheduled September 2014 elections which will allow all Fijians and parliamentary candidates ample time to familiarise themselves with the new constitution.
The Prime Minister also stresses that the government will focus on the improvement of socio-economic and infrastructure conditions for the next 3 years.
He also had a message to the workers and civil servants of the country that they will be treated fairly but he also says that they have to become more efficient and productive.
