The workers have shown good faith, now its employers' turn.
These are the words of Wages Council Chairman Fr Kevin Bar on Fiji Retailers Association President Himmat Lodhia saying that the new wage increase can lead to working hours being reduced and workers being laid off.
Bar said most of the time the laying off of workers is not a direct result of wage rate increases.
The new wages order comes into effect from this Wednesday.
An increase of 30 to 40c is proposed for the wholesale and retail industry which includes cashiers, clerks, salesmen, sewing machinists, storemen, unskilled workers, watchmen and other workers.
