The Prices and Incomes Board has reiterated that it is illegal to increase rent on residential, commercial or industrial premises.

Acting Secretary Lusi Naimawi said the restriction of the increase which was put in place on the 2nd of March 2007 by former Minister for Finance Mahendra Chaudhry is still in place.

Naimawi said the restriction was put in place last year to help people cope with the economic hardship which many were facing. She adds they have received several complaints from members of the public which have resulted in landlords being prosecuted.

Former Finance Minister Mahendra Chaudhry had directed the Prices and Incomes Board to restrict a person from charging a rent, in respect of the letting or continued letting of any premises to which the Counter-Inflation Act applies which exceeds the rent applicable to those premises from the 2nd of March to the end of December 2008.
