We do not have qualified people or machinery to look after most of our infrastructure.
This is one of the main issues highlighted today by various Department Heads at the Works Ministry Capital Works Project Workshop at the Tradewinds Convention Centre.
Principal Engineer Water Taito Delana said for the whole of the Fiji group, the Water Department only has six qualified engineers tasked with looking after their various plants.
Similar sentiments were echoed by Director of National Roads Raphael Smith who said the cost of bringing in machinery used for the upgrading of the roads is very costly and is a major hurdle to many of the capital projects which are planned.
However, Permanent Secretary for Works Anand Kumar said they are looking at various ways to ensure necessary equipment is made available.
