Is Youth Network Credible?
The Young People's Concerned Network had written a letter on Wednesday addressed to both the FHRC Director and Dr Shameem calling for the quick appointment of a new Human Rights Commissioner and for Dr. Shameem to step aside as her reports and comments portrayed the commission in a negative image.
The YPCN raised concern at the report, namely the report she had compiled on 20th January, 2007 titled, "The Assumption of executive Authority on December 5th, 2006 by Commodore Bainimarama: Legal, Constitutional and Human Rights Issues."
The youth network said according to the FHRC report and the following ones Shameem submitted to the UN, she did not take into account the fact that the courts still have to decide on the legality of the events of 5th December, 2006.
And in reply to the issues raised, Dr. Shaista Shameem said once the credibility and integrity of the Youth Network Spokesperson, Pita Waqavonovono, has been established she would reply to their letter.
According to Shameem, Waqavonovono had called for quick action into their alleged human rights abuse case on 24th December, 2006, however, there had been no reports officially lodged with the commission.
