Public Enterprises Minister Aiyaz Sayed-Khaiyum has issued an invitation calling for expressions of interest to enter into an agreement with the Fiji Hardwood Corporation Limited for the purchase of mahogany timber from Fiji Hardwood Corporation.
Sayed-Khaiyum said harvesting of these mahogany plantations has not been carried out in the proper manner with minimal returns to various stakeholders.
He confirmed expression of interests will also be accepted from abroad and they will ensure interests of all are being looked at.
He said the government has put in place the Mahogany Industry Development Decree and under the decree, the Mahogany Industry Council supervises and directs the maintenance and development of the mahogany industry.
He also said that under the decree, Fiji Hardwood Corporation acts on the directions of the Mahogany Industry Council and they are the only one responsible to fell, harvest or remove any mahogany timber from mahogany plantation land or grant access to mahogany plantation for harvesting or removing mahogany timber.
Sayed-Khaiyum said upon the approval from the council, Fiji Hardwood Corporation Limited will enter into agreement to harvest and sell mahogany timber.
