Residents of Nanuku settlement in Vatuwaqa are in a state of shock today after a mother and her son and daughter who were in their early 20's perished in a house fire late last night.
Chairman of the Crime Prevention Committee in the area, Rajendra Udit who stays in the neighborhood said he heard screams at around 11pm.
He rushed to the scene and found the house engulfed in flames.
Udit said they tried to break the front door to rescue the occupants but were unsuccessful.
He said they assisted another family to escape whose house was adjacent to the house on fire.
According to Udit, the family members who lost their lives had good relations with their neighbors.
The owner of the house is currently being interviewed by police.
The timber and corrugated iron house was destroyed however the firefighters managed to control the fire from spreading to nearby houses.
The firefighters battled the flames till about 1am this morning however the three people could not be saved.
Fire tenders rushed to the scene as the firefighters tried their best to rescue the occupants of the house after finding out that a mother and her two children were inside.
The three bodies were found huddled in a corner.
Fijivillage is now trying to get more information on how the fire started.

In another incident, a three bedroom house in Bangladesh settlement in Bulileka Labasa was also destroyed by fire last night.
The house belonged to a 47 year old fisherman.

Late night home fire claims 3 lives
Three people died in a house fire in Nanuku settlement in Vatuwaqa late last night.
National Fire Authority CEO, John O’Connor has confirmed that they received a call at around 11.30pm about the house fire.
He said a mother and her two children perished in the fire.
The owner of the house is currently being interviewed by police.
The man surrendered himself to the police last night.
