Invasion Would Have Been Unlikely
Professor Harper who is the Director of Centre for Defence Studies in Massey University told ABC Pacific Beat that he believes that the presence of Australian troops in Fiji waters around December 5th, 2006, was their preparedness to evacuate Australian citizens out from Fiji if the situation worsened.
He also stated that Australia can't invade Fiji knowing that the Fiji military soldiers are regarded as one of the best in the world and would expect them to defend Fiji's territory.
Professor Harper said it would also be difficult for Australian and NZ troops to go against their Fijian counterparts because they have trained together often.
Meanwhile, almost 44 hours after Interim Prime Minister Commodore Frank Bainimarama made the statement to Village News that he was threatened by Australian Defence Chief, Air Marshall Angus Houston, the Australian government is yet to comment on the issue.
Village News has received confirmation that the Canberra office requested for Bainimarama's interview yesterday. However, no comments have been made as yet.
Today, we contacted Air Chief Marshall Houston's office in Canberra and we have been told that a statement may be released by him.
