Internet becoming more accessible
The Unions 2009 ICT Development Index shows the proportion of households with computers in Fiji increased from 8.9% in 2002, to 18.2% in 2007.
With this, the proportion of households with internet increased from a mere 1.3% in 2002, to 11.5% in 2007 while internet users per 100 inhabitants increased from 6.1% to 10.9% over the same period.
Figures also show that more people in Fiji now have access to fixed telephone lines, while Mobile phones per 100 inhabitants increased significantly between 2002 to 2007 from 10.9% to 63.2% and these figures are before Digicel came into the market in late 2008.
And while the telecommunication providers are raking in the dollars for providing these services, they are also contributing to economic growth as the latest Pacific Economic Bulletin highlights, that the contribution of telecommunications sector to the GDP has averaged about 3.4 percent since 2005.
