Today is International Firefighter's Day.

National Fire Authority Chief Executive Joseva Gavidi said today is a day when firefighters in Fiji and around the world who have lost their lives are remembered for their bravery as well as for the lifesaving work current firefighters do.

To commemorate today, fire stations around the country will display red and blue ribbons, red for fire and blue for water, colours that are internationally recognized as representing emergency services.

Gavidi said in the history of NFA, there has been only one recorded death of a fire fighter during the course of duty.

May 4th used to be a traditional fire fighter's day in many European countries as it was the day of Saint Florian, the patron saint of fighters.

He was the first known commander of one firefighting squad in the Roman Empire and lost his life protecting others' lives and property.
