The Interim government has decided to support the ongoing funding for overseas medical treatment of qualifying patients and medical conditions.

The Interim Health Minister Jiko Luveni said in the past years the demand for government assistance for medical funding increased and this trend is likely to be experienced annually as Non-Communicable Diseases continues to be a significant cause.

Dr Luveni said last year 71 patients were referred overseas for medical treatment and care and the total cost was more than $650,000. She said the government provides an annual ongoing budgetary allocation of $600,000 to the Ministry however, the total cost for treatments not available in Fiji can be estimated at less than $800,000. Fiji also gets $400,000 from NZAID Medical Treatment for treatment done in New Zealand.

The Interim Health Minister said this amount justifies the need for ongoing overseas medical referral rather than establishing the same services and option in Fiji which will cost more than this amount.
