The Interim Prime Minister said the interim government is committed to have elections in March 2009 and stresses that the People's Charter will be in place before the elections.
While responding to the US Deputy Assistant Secretary East Asian and Pacific Affairs, Glyn Davies comments that the US cannot see a concrete time-table for the next elections, Commodore Frank Bainimarama said it is insulting to hear that the US senior official did not understand what they are trying to achieve.
Bainimarama also said it would be naive to just have democratic elections before resolving the long standing problems in the country.
Davis has also admitted that certain sections of the People's Charter objective are not bad but he said the return to democracy is the key.
To this, Commodore Bainimarama said he is satisfied that the senior US official has at least admitted that Fiji does have problems.
He said this is the main reason why the Charter is needed before the next elections.
Meanwhile, PCPI director Angie Heffernan said to resolve the problems one has to take away the cause and this would not be easy for those in power in such a short timeframe.
