Interim PM concerned over food shortage
After visiting the Agriculture Marketing Authority and Fiji Meats yesterday, Commodore Bainimarama said he was surprised that Fiji is not producing enough roots crops for local consumption and for export knowing that root crops of dalo and cassava are staple foods for Fiji.
Marketing Authority's Supervisor for the American Markets Sairusi Balenaivalu stresses that it is imperative for Fiji to meet the demands for roots crops in the US which has opened its market to the country.
And the Chief Executive Officer of Fiji Meats Filipe Alifereti also highlighted to the Interim Prime Minister that there is a large need for livestock and that local supply is insufficient to meet the demands. He said their "magiti" department which supplies prepared meats for functions is normally out of supply as a result of the high demands.
Commodore Bainimarama has assured the two companies that the interim government will look into these matters.
