The interim government is now trying to ensure that Fiji's Permanent Representative to the UN in New York is appointed as soon as possible.

Interim Prime Minister Commodore Frank Bainimarama said Lieutenant Colonel Mason Smith is tipped to take the post and he is now hoping that necessary arrangements are made for him to leave soon.

Although Commodore Bainimarama said NZ Prime Minister Helen Clark will be unsuccessful in getting Fiji out of the UN peacekeeping operations, he wants the new Fiji UN representative to take up the position soon.
