The interim government has decided to set up a State University in an effort to promote higher education.

The interim Education Minister Filipe Bole said the Ministry is currently working on preparing a legislation for the establishment, monitoring and regulation of tertiary institutions which are beyond secondary schools and up to universities.

Bole said this State University will embrace other existing public tertiary institutions. He said without legislation, the establishment of the University of Fiji in Lautoka was caught up in this void.

Bole said the Higher Education bill is expected to be promulgated next month which is very important for the growth of the education sector in the country.

According to Bole, the Secretariat of the Higher Education Advisory Board has conducted consultations countrywide over the past two months and is currently looking into the feedback received.
