Interim Govt Must Fulfill Commitments
Head of the EU Delegation Robert Ridolfi said ten months have been lost in consulting for sugar assistance for 2007, due to the events of December 5th.
He said the Council of the European Union has decided on October 1st, that there will be no assistance this year as allocated, however the 2006 assistance may follow soon.
According to Ridolfi, the 2008 assistance may be lost if commitments are not fulfilled by the interim government.
The Commission said to receive assistance allocated by the EU next year, there should be no back steps from now till May 2008, whether it be emergency rules or slowing down of significant commitments. Further assistance will follow after a democratically elected government is formed in 2009.
Some of the commitments the interim government has to fulfill include census, redrafting of boundaries and electoral reform, appointment of a Supervisor of Elections and appointment of the Vice President in accordance with the constitution.
Meanwhile, Ridolfi has also announced that his term as Head of the EU Delegation in the Pacific has ended and he will be completing his work in Tonga next week.
