Interim Govt Await Response
After numerous questions were raised on the resolution by the National Council for Building a Better Fiji (NCBBF) to convene the forum, the Ministry of Information said the interim administration is moving forward to holding the forum.
It said the interim government had requested President Ratu Josefa Iloilo that it will be desirable that the proposed forum is convened and facilitated in a multilateral framework with the interim government and all major political parties as participants and with input from the NCBBF and also recognized electoral and constitutional reform experts.
The Ministry of Information said President Iloilo requested the joint support of the UN and Commonwealth to convene a forum to be held this month.
It is also proposed that before the forum is held, a joint COMSEC -UN Reconnaissance Mission, which may include Sir Paul Reeves will visit Fiji this month and the purpose of the mission would be to undertake preliminary consultations with all key stakeholders, in particular the political parties, on issues such as the composition and chair of the proposed three member panel.
The president earlier endorsed that a forum to discuss the changes to the electoral system be convened as soon as possible, possibly sometime later this month.
