Interim AG Questions Pacific Leaders
Aiyaz Sayed-Khaiyum said many of Fiji's innocent citizens are suffering as a result of such punitive measures such as travel bans. He questioned as to why the same bans were not placed on the Interim Government in 2000 or the Government of Rabuka post 1987.
Sayed-Khaiyum said the appointment of the Bainimarama Government by the President has been held to be legal and valid in law by a three-member panel of the High Court of Fiji. He added that no such previous government had gone through the legal process or adhered to the court rulings that this Bainimarama Government has.
Sayed-Khaiyum also highlighted that the Interim Government is committed to developing a political and governance framework that is truly democratic, accountable, inclusive, equitable and non-racial.
He reiterated that they do not believe that elections should be held for the sake of holding elections, adding they believe that to ensure true democracy, then you must have equal suffrage and the process of elections which must be transparent. Sayed-Khaiyum told the forum that Bainimarama called a preliminary meeting of all registered political parties, and will this week write again to the political parties to meet with them next month to finalize the agenda and the terms of reference for the Political Forum.
