Inter-University debate launched
In this spirit, the first ever Inter-University Debate Competition was launched today which will see students from the University of the South Pacific and Fiji National University go head to head in a public debate on topics ranging from regional integration, free market economies, governance and the Pacific plan to Colonial legacies and climate change.
While launching the debate competition, Head of the EU delegation to Fiji Wiepke Van Der Goot stressed that debating is more than a mere performance skill or career tool, it embodies the ideals of reasoned argument, the respect for others, to let them have their say and the tolerance of divergent points of view.
Van Der Goot said open and peaceful debate can break all barriers and close the gap between the differences in people’s lives.
The debate is jointly sponsored by the EU, and the French and British High Commissions.
The debate team from USP will be led by Miss South Pacific Merewalesi Nailatikau and will be held next Wednesday and Thursday at the FNU campus in Raiwai.
