Suva lawyer Tevita Fa believes that the tax inquiry team led by Bruce Cowley is independent and has carried out its work in a transparent manner in relation to the investigation against Mahendra Chaudhry.
Fa said although Cowley worked at the same law firm in Australia as the Interim AG, he does not believe that there is a conflict of interest.
Aiyaz Sayed-Khaiyum said the statements sent out by the National Federation Party and Ousted Opposition Leader Mick Beddoes is not worth commenting on.
Both the National Federation Party and ousted opposition leader yesterday afternoon said through press statements that the head of the inquiry team Bruce Cowley is a partner of the law firm Minter Ellison in Brisbane. Both parties say the Interim Attorney General Aiyaz Sayed-Khaiyum worked for Minter Ellison some years ago and this raises the question of independence of the inquiry team.
Sayed Khaiyum has defended this saying that he worked for Minter Ellison in Sydney while Bruce Cowley works for the law firm in Brisbane.
