Cost of doing garment business in Fiji has always been higher and with the new wage rate coming into place from next week, will worsen the situation.
According to Mark Halabe, the Managing Director for Mark One Apparel, while other countries are trying hard to keep their major industries alive, Fiji seems to be doing the opposite after a 20% pay rise has been proposed for the garment industry.
The Saw Millers Association is concerned that decision to increase the hourly wage rate for the saw milling industry was made without consultations.
According to Association President Jay Dayal, the industry may not be able to absorb the 40 to 50 cents increase in the hourly wage rate.
Fiji Hoteliers Association President Dixon Seeto said the 35 cents increase across the board for the hotel and catering industry could drastically affect the smaller operators.
The new wage regulation comes into force from next Wednesday, July 1st.
