The Interim Minister for Indigenous Affairs has the right to make changes to any regulations concerning the Great Council of Chiefs.
Interim Minister for Defense and Cakaudrove High Chief Ratu Epeli Ganilau said right now, the regulations fall under the jurisdiction of Commodore Bainimarama as the Interim Minister responsible, and he has taken the necessary steps to bring in the new regulation.
When questioned on what would happen after the next election as under the new regulation the Minister becomes the Chairman of the GCC and at the same time no one involved in politics should be part of the GCC for 7 years, Ratu Epeli said changes could be made after the elections if the minister feels that amendments are necessary.
In the new regulation gazetted by Bainimarama, the Interim Minister responsible, who is Commodore Bainimarama, is appointed to be a member of the GCC. The Minister is also the Chairman of the GCC and he is also responsible for the appointment of the 52 members of the council.
