India and Malaysia have offered to assist Fiji with its financing requirements for capital projects and infrastructure upgrade program.

Bilateral talks between Finance Minister Mahendra Chaudhry and his Indian counterpart P. Chidambaram took place today in Washington, where they are attending the annual meetings of the World Bank and the International Monetary Fund.

The Interim Finance Minister said we have a number of infrastructure upgrade projects under active consideration and these include the upgrading of our national highway, water and sewerage systems and investment in rural development to boost agricultural production and financing support would be a great help.

He also held discussions on economic and technical cooperation between Fiji and Malaysia with the Malaysia Finance Minister Tan Sri Nor Mohamed Yakcop where the undertaking was given during bilateral talks in Washington.

Tan Sri Yakcop assured Chaudhry that the Malaysian government would be prepared to assist Fiji with its economic recovery program and also advised that Fiji should evolve its own solution for lasting stability and that consensus building in any such exercise was of vital importance.
